Grey whales are baleen whales with an unusual preference for filtering mud on the bottom of shallow bays. Large numbers of worms, shrimp and other invertebrates get ingested by these 50 ft., slow-moving mammals of the sea. In 1984 an adolescent 35 foot grey whale spent the summer in Grice Bay near Tofino, B.C. Scuba divers from National Geographic Society got the first-ever photos of a feeding grey whale in Grice Bay that summer. Their photos greatly assisted in the references for this painting.
