Frank Island, near Tofino, B.C., lies at the end of a long sandy spit connected to Chesterman Beach. In summer the spit or tombolo gradually builds in height as it accumulates more and more sand, easily allowing people to walk to the island. In the winter the storms reverse the process and often the spit is completely covered in turbulent seas. I enjoy painting waters that are full of action and have chosen high tide on an afternoon in winter with a warm glow in the sky to set the mood.
