About Sue Pyper
For much of her life, Sue Pyper lived in the world of ‘practical’ creativity, as a production manager and graphic designer for magazines in London, UK. Her immigration to Vancouver Island’s Comox Valley in 2000, opened her up to a more spontaneous relationship with the visual arts. Applying artistic skills developed at art school in London, she went back to her fine art roots, and returned to expressions of nature in all its forms.
Sue works mostly with ethically harvested, live-edge wood from around Vancouver Island, using the shape and the grain of the wood to reveal the unique story in each piece. Sue often uses a time-consuming technique called pointillism (lots and lots of dots) which is well-suited to wood as it allows the grain and colour to show through and gives her pieces a totally unique look.
Her techniques and use of media continues to evolve: she feels the inspiration available from the natural environment is limitless and has allowed her to "spread her wings" and work on more adventurous and larger scale pieces.
Sue’s work has been shown in venues and at arts events around Vancouver Island, including The Robert Bateman Gallery in Victoria, Butchart Gardens, Filberg Festival and both the Sooke and Sidney fine arts shows. Her work can also be found in galleries and in private collections in the UK, Europe, Canada and the USA. Sue currently lives in the Comox Valley where she works from her sunny studio in Cumberland (open by appointment).
