The wood is Box Elder, an Eastern North American species that is also known as Manitoba Maple. This particular burl was the result of damage to a young tree, when struck by an axe. As the tree healed itself the result was an internal shape that suggested a flower to the Artist. The outside of the burl was almost completely covered by small "bird's eye", or "pin-wheel" grain nodules.
