The moss-covered forests of the outer coast are a subject I return to paint again and again. I find the twisted shapes of rotting root systems covered in ferns provide endless compositional challenges . The rare glimpse of morning light adds an contrast of colour to the somber greens of the forest floor. There are few birds that make these dense forests their home but the tiny winter wren is the exception. Its lyrical, trickling song is astonishingly loud for such a small creature. I chose to place it at the painting's focal point.
