Judge's Comments: "The subtleties in color and value wonderfully capture the feeling of early morning light. Compositionally, the strong horizontals of the boat on the left, the rocks and the brushstrokes in the water all lead our eyes directly to the focal point of the large boat and its warm bright flag. That boat has so much to explore, yet the details are only hinted at and nothing is over rendered. From there, our eyes are directed to the opening through the trees, both by the direction of the boat, but also by the cool lavenders of the forest beyond, mimicking similar colors in the foreground. Finally, that strong vector of the tree on the left moves our eyes down and back to move through the image yet again. A wonderful painting."
