The human nude is my favourite subject matter for my art, but nudity is not fully embraced in art in Western Canada. Therefore, I began a series of female figures that celebrate the human form, yet appear to be dressed in a form fitting evening gown. Viewers have often likened them to mermaids. In envy event, there is a multitude of poses and swishes of the skirts that I am enjoying creating over the years. This female torso is bent forward, as if in a courtesy…. to you? To royalty?? Cipollino marble is quarried in the mountains above the famous town of Carrara, Italy. Carrara is famous for its wonderful white marble, but this variety is equally striking in colour and patterning. Cipollino translates to “onion” in English and refers to the layers of grey/green striations that flow through the yellow/cream background.
