Clement Kwan, SFCA,OPA is an accomplished Canadian oil painter whose work brings together the traditions of classical realism and Impressionism. His figurative painting are distinguished by luminous colour, expressive brushwork, movement, and an enduring sense of optimism.
 
“I like my paintings to express happiness,” Kwan says. “I use my artistic skills to create paintings that give people joy and hope- my way of helping to make the world a better place.”
 
Born and educated in southern China, Kwan immigrated to Canada in 1979 and has made Victoria, British Columbia, his home for many years. His passion for drawing and painting began in childhood. Following his early artistic training in China, he continued to develop his craft in Canada through more than 30 years of dedicated study and practice, followed by more thank 23 years as a professional fine artist working with commercial galleries.
 
The beauty and cultural of Vancouver Island have become an important source of inspiration for Kwan. His paintings often explore the vitality of everyday life, the human figure, music and dance, as well as the natural beauty of the west Coast. He seeks not simply to record what he sees, but to capture the light, atmosphere, movement and emotional spirit of his subjects.
 
Kwan’s approach combines carefully observed realism with the freedom of expressive painting. He often brings a high degree of refinement to the principal subject- particularly the face or focal point- while allowing the surrounding passages to become increasingly painterly and spontaneous. This balance between Observation and expression, precision and freedom, has become an important Characteristic of his work.
 
His artistic influences include the later impressionism of John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn and Joaquin Sorolia, as well as the work of contemporary master painter Richard Schmid and his childhood friend and fellow artist Mian Situ.
 
Kwan has exhibited extensively in regional national and international exhibitions throughout Canada and the United States and has received numerous awards for his work. He is a Senior Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists(SFCA) and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America (OPA). His paintings are held in public and private collections and are represented by commercial galleries in Canada and the United States.
