About Philip Buytendorp

 

Philip Buytendorp was born into a creative environment. His father and grandfather were painters and his mother worked with clay (not with a wheel… mostly slab work) There was no shortage of inspiration in his life as there were constant forays into nature during his childhood in Manitoba.   

Phil moved to Calgary and spent six years in the construction industry and some oil field work but always had a pencil and sketch pad handy resulting in many quick drawings. The urge to create never left him.  He eventually moved to British Columbia and found work as a cement mason. During this time, he met the love of his life and married her.

He moved to Piers Island with his wife and family for two years.  “My enthusiasm for painting exploded at this point.”! 

The “Group of Seven” Canadian painters were a huge influence in his early work, mostly due to the broad brush strokes and fearless use of colour they employed. 

Phil has played with pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolour, acrylic, oils, and dry point etching, but has settled on oil painting as his favourite medium. 

He has been involved in more than sixty group and one man shows over his thirty-year professional career. Phil’s work hangs in multiple corporate and private collections worldwide and continues to be highly collectible. 

Phil lives near the west coast of British Columbia with his wife Jacquie and continues to draw inspiration for his work from the waters and mountains surrounding his home.
