About Tiffany Hastie

Growing up on the west coast of British Columbia has been a wonderful experience and afforded me the opportunity to develop an appreciation for landscape and nature and the many valuable insights they provide.

For the past 25 years I’ve focused largely on painting the landscape in miniature and the interesting tension created by capturing the “Grand View” in a tiny format. This unusual technique makes for a compelling intimacy with the subject and offers a unique experience for both me as the artist and for those who enjoy this type of artwork.

In addition to miniature painting I’ve authored two painting books (Endless Season’s 1 & 2), teach acrylic painting courses in both regular and miniature disciplines, and am working through a series of exploratory abstract paintings featuring a ball and block motif.

Block paintings – What are they about?

My purpose for this series of paintings is to create an expression of the dynamism of the human spirit (represented by the circle) as it navigates a journey through the experience of life (represented by the blocks). The black line surrounding all objects signifies the great mystery that holds things together, and yet separate from each other, creating a perfectly imperfect motif of existence and what one makes of it.

After many years of studying and painting external landscapes it has been an adventure of a new kind to reflect on the curious nature of internal landscapes and what existential aspects of them might look like painted in simple form.

Animal block paintings – What are they about?

Expanding my exploration of life dynamism in abstraction, I’ve carried over my ball and block motif into the realm of animal imagery, further expressing the life-force (represented by the circle) as it connects with symbolic matter of existence (represented by the blocks). The black line surrounding all objects continues to signify the great mystery that holds these things together, and yet apart, acknowledging the significance of each and respecting the relationship between them.
