Out in dry country in the small village of Kheechan in the state of Rajasthan, India, the villagers have been feeding thousands of cranes for several hundred years now. They feed them to gain merit. On one morning in February 2005 when we visited the village, the estimate was that there were 6,000 to 8,000 cranes in the area. Looking through my 400 mm lens with attached doubler into the distant fields and sand dunes, I was startled to see this image of the elegant white, grey and black birds against the warm glow of the sand in the distance. With each click of the shutter, I was paying homage.
