About George Buytendorp
George Buytendorp (1923–2014) was a Dutch-born Canadian painter and art restorer celebrated for his oil landscapes and traditional technique. Born in the Netherlands in 1923, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and Related Sciences and completed a five-year apprenticeship in fine art restoration, continuing his family’s artistic legacy. After establishing studios in Arnhem and later Amsterdam, he immigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in Manitoba, where he became active as both an artist and teacher.
Buytendorp’s work, often depicting prairie scenes and natural landscapes, reflects a blend of European training and Canadian sensibilities. His paintings have been exhibited across Canada and are in numerous private and corporate collections. He passed away in 2014, leaving behind a body of work that continues to appear in galleries and auctions.
