Lying between Ucluelet and Tofino in Pacific Rim National Park, the four kilometer Florencia Bay, was named after the square rigger that was wrecked there in 1861.
The north end of the beach has some larger boulders that make interesting shapes as the water channels weave patterns at low tide. I was painting this scene on location one late winter afternoon when the first gusts of an incoming storm blew my easel and wet oil painting into the sand. The painting was barely recognizable but the image was still strong in my memory so I started it over again next week in my studio using acrylics and a larger canvas.
