Living on the west coast of Vancouver Island is a great place to experience the full power of the North Pacific. Winter storms are exhilarating but they are also accompanied by massive quantities of rain. Just as the storm breaks, though, there is often a gap before the next onslaught when the skies clear and the seas are still whipped to a frenzy. It is this short window that often occurs at the end of the day that is depicted here, with the evening light giving a pink hue to the sky and reflections. Rosie Bay is a rugged beach near the town of Tofino, B.C. but a housing development has recently been built along the rocky outcrops that appear in the right of the painting. Part of my inspiration was to paint this scene before the developers cleared and blasted for the house foundations.
