I enjoy walking on the beach at any time of the year, something we are fortunate to be able to do here on the West Coast.  We are also fortunate to have so many species of birds winter along our coast, which in turn allows us to see a variation in plumage depending on the season.  The winter plumage of the Western Sandpiper is quite gray, lacking its breeding colours although definitely not lacking in beauty.
