“Sailor Lad” is typical of the hundreds of small, wooden fishing boats that operated on the B.C. coast. She spent much of her working life based out of Powell River, but unlike many of her contemporaries that have been abandoned as their wooden hulls age and become obsolete, the Sailor Lad has had a complete refit at the Steveston Ship Yards. Although most of her career was spent catching salmon, in this painting she is rigged to catch halibut which is done by dropping long lines of baited hooks along the bottom. The flags at the stern are used to mark the end of the lines which are picked up a day or two after being set. The back drop to the scene could be any of the deep fjord’s such as Roscoe or Kynoch Inlet that occupy the middle section of the B.C. coast.
