Unlike Pacific Salmon which die after spawning, Steelhead, being a marine version of a rainbow trout, are able to return 3 to 4 times to fresh water to mate and spawn. They are highly prized as sport fish in the winter months as they spend this time in rivers and streams throughout B.C. This painting is one of my favourite underwater scenes as I feel it has captured the feeling of being in a clear, cold river in the fall before the heavy rains arrive which causes the waters to become murky. The golden autumn leaves add an important touch of colour.
