When one thinks of St. Peter’s in the Vatican City, one normally imagines the magnificent architecture and the art inside, which was truly thrilling. But after viewing the  inside and stepping out into the daylight, I walked along the columns and noticed the light’s effect on them. From the angle I was walking, I could not see the spaces between the columns thus creating a flat surface. The lighting on each column gradually changed from lighter on the left to darker on the right and at first glance looked like a stand of birch trees. I also recalled my photograph of hawser ropes on the ship in the Antarctic.
