"Often seen in flocks following ships, the herring gull is one of the most common gulls in Eastern North America. Where I live in the West, the glaucous-winged gulls are equivalent to the herring gull - similar in size and habits. It is their appearance that differs; the herring gull has black tips to the primary wing feathers, while the wing tips of the glaucous-winged gulls are a powdery gray. Against a light blue sky, the glaucous-winged gulls become ethereal. " - Robert Bateman
