This abstract sculpture is carved from red travertine which is quarried in Turkey. Although abstract in form, the composition emulates a female torso, with its hourglass shape, shifting hips and flaring, angel-wing-like shoulders. Travertine is a calcium based stone and the tiny cavities throughout the stone are the result of salt water penetrating the rock eons ago and dissolving the calcium. Look closely and you can see tiny crystals that started to grow inside each cavity. The orange and red tones of the stone give the piece a sense of warmth. I have given the sculpture a matte finish so one can enjoy the rich colours of the stone, yet shadows can be successfully held for drama.
