Jupiter Marble and Granite

I carved this möbius sculpture from a rare piece of marble that was quarried on a remote island in Alaska.
Because of the swirling stripe patterns of purple, white, black and green remind one
of the largest planet in our solar system, the stone has been
christened Jupiter marble. I’ve mounted it on a base of black granite
from Quebec. The möbius form is a combination of art and science.
It is essentially a three dimensional depiction of a two dimensional
object. A möbius strip has only a width and length & has only one side
and one edge, ergo two dimensions. I have given the strip thickness,
so it has three dimensions, but it is still fascinating - take a finger of
one hand to mark a place on one edge and with the other hand, trace
along the undulating edge. Eventually, your finger will meet up,
proving that there is only one edge to the form. A classic möbius can
be fashioned from a uniform piece of paper, but I have taken artistic
licence and have distorted the width of this one in order to maximize
the colour pattern of the marble. I’ve given the sculpture a matte
finish so one can enjoy the colour of the beautiful marble, but the
stone can successfully hold dramatic shadows.
