Clement Kwan Spotlight

Known for his accomplished portraits and figurative paintings, Clement Kwan combines classical observation with expressive brushwork, luminous colour, movement, and a strong sense of optimism. His paintings reflect a lifelong commitment to drawing and painting from life and his desire to create work that brings people joy and hope.

Alongside a selection of Clement Kwan’s more familiar portraits and figurative works, the exhibition introduces a portfolio of plein air paintings that many viewers may not have encountered before. Clement is a member of the Alfrescoes Outdoor Painters, whose members gather every Friday to paint at designated locations throughout Southern Vancouver Island and the Victoria area. Working directly from nature, Clement typically completes a small plein air painting within two to three hours, sometimes returning to the work later or the following day to add further detail.

For Clement, plein air painting is more than simply working outdoors, it is a discipline that demands years of practice to develop convincing skills. These intimate paintings reveal his ability to respond directly to changing light, atmosphere, colour, and the character of the landscape.

Together with his portraits and figurative works, they offer viewers a deeper understanding of his artistic journey and the lifelong observation, practice, and passion for painting from life that continue to shape his distinctive artistic vision.
